Zippered back prom dress to corset back prom dress

So my mom's boyfriends daughter Samantha has prom to attend on the 18th. They looked everywhere for a dress and on a limited budget couldnt find one they liked that fit just right. She finally found this one in a consignment shop but it wouldnt quite zip up all the way. I get a phone call, "we found a dress but it doesnt zip up about 6 inches, can you do something." My only suggestion was add some fabric in the side seams where it wouldnt be seen until I seen the dress. Immediately I knew this was a job for a corset. Only problem was, I had never done a corset nor had I ever messed with a prom dress! I was scared to death I was going to mess it up and they would be out a dress and money. I was very hesitant to cut into it and finally said forget it, it has to be done and I have to do it. So without further ado, here it is.

ETA: Quick tutorial is in the comments.

This is the dress as modeled by Jane Pole. Here is the front view.

Here is the back view before I ever touched it. On Jane, it zips up because she is a slender gal, probably a size 8 I'd say.

And finally, here is the finished product. I couldnt find any black or white spaghetti strap material or cording after searching everywhere so I settled for silver "lame cord" as Hobby Lobby calls it.

The ties are left long so when it comes time for the big day she can get into it fairly easy. After she gets it on and is laced up we will cute the ties to length so they arent flowing on the floor. I will post an action pic when she has it on and ready to go. It also doesnt look so frumpy in the waist when she tried it on afterward, like it does on Jane. Its because Jane's waist isnt as big to fill the waist up with the corset.

So what do you all think? I did take pics of each step as I did it so if there is enough call for a tutorial, I will post one. Enjoy!

Updated with pics of her wearing it.

First, I measured how far down we wanted the corset and put a pin there. Next I started by taking out the zipper stitches in between the lining and the outside fabric, down to the point where the pin is for the placement of the corset. When I got it down far enough, I cute the zipper off about ½ inch above this, enough space so the zipper could be folded down and sewn in place like a zipper stop. I used what hobby lobby calls lame cord but you can use anything for your tabs and ties. I made them about 2 inches long, folded them in half and used wonder tape to hold them in place on each side. After they are all in place, pin through all layers (you should still see the seam from where you ripped it out previously) Stitch about a ¼ inch from the edge on the inside of the fabric/lining all the way down and going a little past the sipper on each side. Use whatever you prefer to make the ties. I used about 6 yards of the same lame cord until she put the dress on and cut it where I needed to. We left enough on there to where it was the same length as the dress and tied a little knot on the ends to secure it. You’re done.

Where you rip the zipper from you will see which layers it is sandwiched between. This is the same space you will the little tabs for the corset. Let me know if you need more help!
